The Woody Guthrie Center

It was in December 2011 that the Kaiser Foundation purchased the Woody Guthrie Archives. The original timeline was for The Woody Guthrie Center to open by the end of 2012. I haven't heard anything in awhile, and wondered how it is coming along.

I am a Woody Guthrie fan, although not an expert by any means. I have read Bound for Glory and a few of the biographies about him, and love his music.

The lead photo in this article is one of my favorite Woody Guthrie images.

Big fan, too.  Amazes me today the wide "acceptance" he seems to have gained by elements that are most decidedly very right of center...who know nothing about his true feelings or politics!

OETA (dare I say that 4 letter word...?) played their story about Woody during the latest fund-beg!  I saw it very late at night - started about midnight and ended about 2:00 am.  Made for a wonderful 6:00 am wake-up call!!  Show was exceptional - loved every minute of it!

It took a little longer than expected, but it looks great.

I like the Associated Press article in Billboard, although I don't know if I fully agree that acknowledgment of Woody Guthrie in his home state, outside of Okemah, has been rare. At one time that was true, but recent years have seen more acceptance and appreciation for the legendary songwriter. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 1997, its first year of existence. And last year's Woody Guthrie Centennial Concert at the Brady Theater was very successful.

I stopped by over lunch. . .  $8 to get in.  I thought they would be heavily endowed and be able to keep the price very low ($5 or under).  Not saying they are over charging or anything, just what I was thinking.

Place looks great.  I didn't do the full tour as I only had a few minutes and want to see it all, but I really look forward to getting back in there.

Took a very LONG time for Oklahoma appreciation of Woody.  This state was a big McCarthy fan base for a long time...  There were at times 'disagreements' in school with people who weren't such fans.... rednecks versus hippie freaks.

I think the reason many people here in Okrahoma can have "warm feelings" about him now is the fact that he has been dead for 40+ years.  If he were alive, he would still be persona-non-grata around here for the most part.


The "Republican types" who claim 'kinship' to Woodie - or even an appreciation of his music - have never actually listened to it....

Woody Guthrie Center Announces New Partnership

The center announced today that it will be the first United States affiliate to the GRAMMY Museum, which is based in Los Angeles. The GRAMMY Museum's executive director, Bob Santelli, says they are partnering with selective cultural institutions.

"This relationships would, indeed, be a two-way street. It would mean: the sharing of resources, technology, expertise, sharing of exhibits, sharing of scholarship; putting on and co-producing concerts, academic conferences, programs, etc."

Santelli also emphasizes that partnerships will also include universities and interns.

"To come to the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, but perhaps come to Tulsa as well. And to send kids from Tulsa to the GRAMMY Museum. Two-way street that is mutually beneficial to both institutions, and in the end mostly beneficial to students as well as to the communities we establish these relationships with."

To add to the announcement, the Woody Guthrie Center is celebrating its first anniversary. It also announced today as the opening day for the Bruce Springsteen: A Photographic Journey exhibition presented by both the Woody Guthrie Center and the GRAMMY Museum.
