Loss of Respect for the Office

I have started watching The West Wing, really enjoy the show.  I have noticed one thing, regardless of the relationship between the parties or the situation at hand, there has always been the respect for the "office" of the President.  "Mr. President" this and that.  I know it may be a little more dramatized for TV, but it is what I even remember from the military.  There has always been the respect for the position, not the person.  Which has got me thinking.  Whereas the TV show may have overdone the "Mr. [insert position here]", I believe todays media is single handedly responsible for the removal of respect for the office.  And I know it didn't just start with the sitting president, or even the last couple... but the media today has amplified it and it doesn't help that they have a 24/7/365 platform in which to spout it.

How can we teach our children about respect for authority when we are the first to disrespect the highest position [not person] in our country?

Hard to show respect for something that's no longer trusted.

That 24/7/365 thing took away any remaining trust with all the "gates".
