Alot of poor brothers and sisters are in need of a year of release, when the poor are satisfied liberally, and the working class are loosed from debts and burdens.  Besides being a commandment in love, a coordinated effort would prevent worse things from happening.  

Do good, or do evil, heck, kick against it, and be strong while you do it!

No, I have not heard of it.  I was raised Roman Catholic and taught the King James Version is heresy; I don't own one.  I do have the true Bible, the Douay Bible, and will check it out.  (I am trying to inject some humor here, so no religious rants please.)

I was thinking the same thing, but didn't have the guts to post it.  I assume we are referring to the more prurient definition of "release" here.

Note to rhymnrzn, we don't mean to trivialize or belittle your original post.  Just having some innocent fun here.  I will check my Bible (Rome approved, Catholic version of course!) and enlighten myself; I assume your post is about charity and providing for the poor and less fortunate.

Being one of the very few religious facts of which I am aware, I'll take a stab at explaining.  According to old testament tradition, Jews were obligated to forgive all debts & trespasses every seven years.  Seven is very symbolic in Jewish tradition--obviously the seventh day is the Sabath, but also every seven years farmers were required to not farm their fields, but instead spend the year studying the Torah.  Seven is the number associated with all cycles--after seven, each person is given the opportunity to start anew.  If you didn't know, some of our laws follow that tradition--you can only file for bankruptcy every 7 years.

I recall in the year 2000, many religious organizations were pushing for third-world debt relief, in the Jewish tradition.  Bono was a big proponent of the "Jubilee year."  Now that it 2007, I presume the push will be made again.

Thank you pmcalk for the explanation.  I am aware of the details you explained, I have never heard it referred to "year of release" before, and your analogies to current laws are most interesting.
