Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the line of presidential succession went to the Speaker of the House after the VP.  At least that's how the late Jerry Ford became VP and then President.  He was the Speaker.  I don't think that Bush - despite his imperial presidency - can simply choose someone to fill the VP slot.

May you live in interesting times.

Ed:  The Speaker of the House fills that role only in line of succession due to death of both the president & vice-president.  In case of vacancy, the president can choose whomever he wants (Nixon just happened to choose Ford).

But--here's why I think RM will lose the bet.  Anyone that Bush chooses must be confirmed by both houses.  Who could he possibly choose that the house & senate would confirm?  Unless Cheney dies (we'll see after this hospitalization), Bush isn't going to let him resign.

If all he needs is someone who can get approved by the House and the Senate...easy problem.

Brittany is out of rehab, Ryan Secrest has a popular tv show, Peyton Manning won a Super Bowl, Everybody loves Raymond, Bill Gates has retired and has some free time, the President's mother, Barbara Bush seems cool, and who doesn't like Adam Sandler?

Each of these would be more popular than Dick Cheney.
Power is nothing till you use it.

Needless to say, I'm doubtful.

Either way, it's obvious Cheney's not a popular guy in D.C. and is a liability for the Bush administration. I'm not taking up RM on his bet because Tricky Dick may leave sooner than later. The announcement of a blood clot in his leg just before the Scooter Libby verdict certainly sets up a scenario in which he resigns because of "health reasons."

Wow.  Condi Rice for prez.  Kill two birds with one stone, black and female.  Much more economical for votes than a Clinton/Obama ticket.  Of course, I'm sure she's seen as an "Aunt Tommie". [;)]

Got a lot of potential firsts in this election- first female, first black, first Hispanic, first Italian, first Mormon, am I missing anyone here?

RW- FYI- Just got back from having our friend Harry Don lop my mop over at Crystal City.  Animated as ever.  It's like attending a 10 minute long 12 step meeting.

Like I heard someone say before, I'd love to have a black lesbian for president solely for the cachet of it all, but not THAT one. [:P]

Let me correct you on this one point. Gerald Ford was never ever Speaker of the House
