I was wondering what everyone's favorite chinese restaurants are in the area...

Even though it's a chain, my wife and I like Pei Wei a lot.  And although not Chinese, Brookside Lao Thai is quite tasty.  We're not big on the Chinese buffets, so I can't speak for those.

lao thai was good when it was on 71st.  Pei Wei is good for Asian-esque food for non Asians cooked by well trained Hispanics.  For authentic Chinese food Great Wall at 71st/Yale is good, just dont order off the white people menu.  If you want dim sum (technically Cantonese) go over to the Econolodge by 11th/Garnett.

really there isn't a lot of good authenic Chinese places in town anymore.  This is mainly because Chiense people can generally find better work than cooking.  Royal Dragon -can- be good if you order off the manager's menu and not eat the buffet.

As a rule I don't suggest buffets, but if you HAVE to go to one, the one at 131st/Memorial would be the one to go. It is run by real Chinese and they recently got rid of everyone illegal.  Just don't look at the clientele or you will lose your appetite (porkers).

for super cheap Sizhuan style cooking by Vietnamese, Sezchuan Express at 51st/memorial is good.  rice is crap, but the stir fried dishes are good.

I had only one experience at The Great Wall.

It's been over 10 years ago.  When my meal arrived, they brought this crock pot looking thing that contained the rice for my meal and it had a spoon for me to dish the rice on my plate.  It was about the size of one of those ice buckets you find in a hotel room
At the angle I was sitting, I could see into the kitchen.  About half way through my meal, the table next too me finished up and left.  I witnessed the wait staff bus the table and take what was remaining of their rice bucket to the kitchen and put that "used" rice back into their rice bin.  Granted – it wasn't like the customers were eating directly out of the rice bucket – but I am pretty sure that once food leaves the kitchen, it should never go back into circulation.

Needless to say, I couldn't eat another bite.

And as I remember, shortly after that I heard they were shut down for a short time for health code violations.

However, as I said it's been over 10 years, so they could be totally differnt by now.

But to get back on topic – I don't have a refined taste for Chinese but I like a take-out place called Leong's on 21st & 129th

oh yes, Great Wall management has changed since then.

Try Golden Gate just South of Steve's Sundry in between 26th and 27th on Harvard....

I'm not impressed with Chinese restaurants in town; however, if you are looking for great Asian cooking try Thai and Vietnamese.  Ri Le's, a long time Vietnamese restaurant at 91st and Yale is one of my favorites.  My wife and I had them cater our wedding reception and had numerous compliments from the locals and out-of-towners.

ah yes, that place gets Micheal Delgiornios seal of approval.

The best drama free Vietnamese in town is Viet Huong at 21st/Memorial.

Mekong River, Vietnamese, NW corner of 71st and Memorial.

Also, I know it's just a take-out place, but I absolutely love Fortune Chef.

For sushi, I like In The Raw.

Royal Dragon at 51st and Memorial.  One block West of Memorial and North side of 51st street. Good food.
