Awesome pics, brings back some memories.

Where was that MAHU mansion at? Seems I remember seeing it but can't remember where.

what was the huge stone house on the west side of memorial betweeen 21st and 31st, there is a new infill 'hood there now... we used to play in that mansion every day... we thought that it was haunted, creepy basement and the neighboring field had dingos... real, honest to god dingos... good times...
"It costs a fortune to look this trashy..."
"Don't believe in riches but you should see where I live..."

Porky and brunoflipper, the house that you are both thinking of was across the street from Oertles at 25th and Memorial. That was the MA-HU Mansion. It's now a small neighborhood on the east side, and Terrace Park on the land where the house stood.

The Quik Trip photo was from the 1984 Memorial Day flood.

Where do you get all those pics?  Are they from your personal collection?  I've often thought about driving around taking random shots of different parts of town and certain lesser appreciated buildings, because it always seems like there is a lack of those kinds of pics now...  Thanks for posting them.

Yes they are from my personal collection. I got interestested in photography in 1973 when my dad and one of my brothers got into it. We actually built our own darkroom in the garage of our house in 1975 and did all of our own black and white work, we used to have all of our color stuff done at PIC Photolab at 21st & Memorial. I went on to be a newspaper and yearbook photographer in high school at Nathan Hale graduating in 1981. I still have several boxes of negatives and pictures dating back to the mid seventies and am cuurently trying to scan all of the negatives into a digital format to preserve them. Will share some more when I have time and guess I should put them in the Photoblog section.

The Ambulance in the Parking Lot at Oertle's

Ever notice there was an Ambulance parked near the north entrance to Oertle's quite often?

My mom and I drove up to the Ma Hu Mansion right after the ground breaking ceremonies held for Oertle's store around 1963.

She was concered with the parking lot lights and sound from the PA system affecting the neighbors, especially his home which was directly across from where the the parking lot would be.

A butler opened the door for us.  The gentleman who owned the Mansion was very nice and invited us in.  He told my mom, "Ms. Oertle, I can put up with most anything as long as I have a supermarket that close to my house, just glad someone is building a store so close by."

He was a regular shopper at the store. He was chauffeured around town in a private ambulance.I remember seeing him and his ambulance parked there alot. Many of you may of noticed the Ambulance there as well.

There was a special kind of livestock on his property.  Anyone remember what they were?

Here are a few photos I took of Terry Doss scrapbook supplied by Pro Helmet Designs in Tulsa.  They are photos of newspaper articles from the 1970's when Dirt Track Racing was in its prime in Oklahoma.

I am in the process of scanning in over 100 weekly programs from Tulsa Speedway 1974 to 1980 something. I am also working on an Interactive Web Site for Legend Racing from Oklahoma.

Enjoy,

As for the live stock they had Texas Long Horn cattle and a bird aviary that had peacocks and other birds in it.
On the northwest corner of the property is where the aviary and a barn with equipment to maintain the field. In 1967 the kids who lived diagonally across the street from where I grew up set the field on fire and destroyed the barn and the aviary. Other than some walk way and parts of the perimiter wall for the house, the only thing left the last time I was there was one wall of the barn.

The first race I ever went to at the old Tulsa Speedway before they built the big track at the fair grounds, was the night that Bob McCutchen driving the "0" car flipped in turn one and went over the catch fence and landed in the pit area. I saw that picture in your collection! I remember going one night to the new track in the mid 70's and the when they went to hand out the roll over trophy, they gave it to the trophy girl because she had rolled her own personal car days earlier.

I went to school with Emmet Hahn's son Tommy and Fox Temple's daughter Valerie.
