Do you remember....

Here's some more things inherently Tulsa for your consideration. Brought this up on the TV Memories site, thought I'd see what you may remember...

Anybody remember "Beauty Biz," with the founder and owner Dan Howell doing the commercials? Over a mix of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's 1984 hit "Relax," he'd display what was on sale that week, and remind us that if it was "in New York on Monday and in LA on Tuesday, it's at Beauty Biz on Wednesday." Visiting Tulsa, I saw that the Beauty Biz stores became Sally Beauty Supply (my research shows Biz got bought out). In High School, I almost went to work for them, but when I passed my Cosmetology Licensing Exams, I cautiously declined the offer and cast about for something better.

How about BJ Furniture, the Furniture Store with a Heart (because BJ Furniture cares about people!)? Their pitchman was one Bobby Lester (whatever became of him?), and he was full of all this down-home folksy charm and warmth.

OK, how about KMOD, the Rainbow Station. KMOD was my absolute favorite station, and it's still my station of choice when I fly into Tulsa, and I even stream it to my computer. I remember "Two for Tuesday" and their programming such as "The Seventh Day" and "The Side Show," as well as the show they played Sunday nights called "Sunlight."

I remmeber their on-air personalities such as Jim Jones, Scary Mary Summers, Mel Myers (didn't know them personally, but I do remember hearing them). I also remmeber in particular one Sherri Quinn, who I knew in passing (we partied together once or twice; she'd palyed some on-air demo's of her air-checks, and I think she'd said was with KMOD among other local stations. In any case, whether I knew them or not, does anybody know what happened to them?

On the topic of KMOD, does anybody remember a non-commercial weekend they had in Spring 1982, and in the same year, their Southern Rock 500, a full weekend of Skynyrd, Hatchet and other Southern Rock luminaria?

Oh, yes, those were some great examples of local advertising. No slick Madison Avenue hype or hooplah, just straight ahead, low-budget TV commercials with a local feel. In fact, every time I hear the song "Relax," I always think of Dan Howell's shilling for Beauty Biz, and I get a chuckle.

Oh, here's one: do you remember the local Tulsa commercial's for Donnie's Rejuvenation Hair Care from 1988-1989, replete with Old Skool hip hop and elektronik funk and dance. I think the lyrics were "For the hot new look to make everybody stare" and "Donnie's has good things for your hair/Wanna show ya how much they care" in its music.
