Can't believe I scooped Sgrizzle, an admitted "tripper" on this one.

I can not believe all the negative comments on that page!  Why the heck not name everything if someone is willing to pay?  Especially things that are historically sponsored like events centers, arenas, and the like?

And to have a fantastic corporate citizen like QT step up to help out the fairgrounds, thank you!  Better QT pay the millions and tack their name on than taxing the citizens more.

sgrizzle

It hasn't shown up in my RSS feeds yet.

Too bad the concessions won't be from QT. Taquitos at the fair..

cannon_fodder

69 cent drinks at the fair!  Along with $6.99 twelve packs!  I (heart) QT.

2.6 million over 10 years, so $260,000 a year.

That more than makes up for the rent Bell's paid if I remember the figures correctly.  Interesting.

Maybe QT wants to put a store in on the old Bells site?  :D

Nah, then Cadieux would have to cut heads with Murphy.

I have been wondering when QT would step out and start doing some corporate sponsorship like this. I know they have been great at donating to lots of charities and supporting events. Its often after a company becomes larger and has been around for a while that they then can start helping to build and support large things like; hospitals, schools and colleges, events centers, river development etc. in the local community. Its good to have company headquarters located in your town that way some of those company profits they get from all over the country or world gets spent in your town.

And yes, why all the whining in the TW? I thought we could be a negative bunch on here but the crowd on there is even worse.

Maybe they could put the Golden Driller in a QT shirt and nametag

2.6 million dollars for ten years divided by 475 stores equals about a buck and a half per store per day.

I spend that much every day at the QT by my house.

I don't think we were debating whether Quik Trip could afford this stunt :D

Arent they offering involvement and money for the river tax proposal too?

I probably spend $400 on gas and $75-100 on merch a month at QT myself.  Usually the one by myself, but I mix it up a lot.  I like the fact that the layout is exactly the same no matter which one you walk into.

Porky

Seems awful Jerry Springer like of Quik Trip to be doing this. But then having the PAC renamed to the Quik Trip Center wouldn't of made much sense either.

Lets just be thankful it won't be named the Kum & Go Center, that would be a hard one to explain to people visiting Tulsa.

Why not sell naming rights to everything the Government owns?  We're just a Corporate Plantation afterall, right?

Well, one reason not to is that we're already totally oversaturated by advertising, and maybe just maybe we could use a break from the constant ad bombardment to either relax, contemplate or maybe focus on something useful.

Another reason, for instance, like our poor Union Public School children, had the Stadium and UMAC naming rights sold.  So, as a result, our children are being involuntarily exposed to corporate advertising everytime they go to a football game or to a Mandatory school assembly.

Like the "naming" rights on East 71st street.  I think BOK is a fine local financial institution, but permitting their Tombstone in every median flower bed from Peoria to Mingo is really more than I want to see.

See, I already PAID for the road once, just like the Union School District residents already paid for the Stadium once, and the UMAC once (really 1.5x because of Flint Co's cost "overruns").

It cost Tulsa taxpayers a whopping $100,000,000 for those 6 miles of 6 lane road on East 71st Street.

Selling name rights to government assets just shows how far we've sunk in the LEADERSHIP both locally and in our country.

Here's a sterling example:

Today, instead of naming our new Aircraft SuperCarriers, the most potent power projection weapon in our Navy's arsenal after our military heros like John Paul Jones, Stephen Decatur or Gen. Jimmy Doolittle, or famous battles like Savo Island, Midway, Coral Sea, Lexington, Constellation, etc., they are now being named after politicians:

I give you the U.S.S. John Stennis.  A nuclear aircraft Supercarrier named after a career, segregationist era southern Senator.

Boy, now that's something to really inspire our sailors and naval aviators the fight for their country!

Followed shortly thereafter by the U.S.S. Gerald Ford, U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, and the U.S.S. George H.W. Bush.

I accept that the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy may be named after a war hero, who was awarded the Navy Cross after losing PT 109.

Same drivel has happened in our public schools:

Instead of now naming schools after Daniel Webster, Thomas Edison, Orville Wright, Will Rogers, Nathan Hale, Henry David Thoreau, John Marshall, Longfellow, Adm. Byrd, Adm. Nimitz, etc., TPS's last public High School was named after that great American Hero:

Charles Mason, Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent.

I'm joking, right?

No.

When the Leadership goes, start looking for somewhere else to live.  The rot has surely set in.

Apres moi, le Deluge.

I think Nike should sponsor our police force so they can wear those nifty "swooshes" under their badges.

A fire station could be sponsored by Hasty Bake.

This road sponsored by Goodyear tires...

I am going to be watching City Council meetings for product placement.

1) If we paid $100,000,000 for 71st 6 miles of 71st street we got robbed.  According to PIKEPASS $100,000,000 would buy about half of the Creek Turnpike.  A large portion of which is elevated (read expensive).  So I will be needing a source to show that 71st Cost $100,000,000, in all of 1991 the City of Tulsa spent under $111 million on ALL ROAD work EVERYWHERE in the city:
http://www.cityoftulsa.org/ourcity/ordinances/Title43-C.asp

Pardon my skepticism, but doubling the budget for one road is a lot.

2) Without BOk putting their 'tombstones' there we would not have a landscaped median.  It would be a barren 6 lane road.

3) Like the tombstones, Union resident's PAID FOR the stadium - but did not have to pay for the seats, the score board, the concession stands, or the bathrooms since those were covered by PepsiCo and other advertisers.  Without whom everyone in the district would involuntarily be forced to pay for upgrades.

4) You forgot the warships:
USS George Washington
USS Abraham Lincoln
USS Harry Truman
USS Bonhomme Richard (Benjamin Franklin)
USS Winston S. Churchill

Those are just the ACTIVE vessels you forgot with the unforgivable names of politicians. This isn't a new trend and dates back to our English roots.  In fact, the first ever US warship was named the Alfred - after the King of Wessex (a politician).  I guess we should blame the horrible leadership of idiots like Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin for starting the trend.

5) While I do think naming a school for a superintendent is a bit off the deep end - so what?  Any name you come up with someone is going to whine about it.  He owned slaves.  He killed indians.  He wasnt american.  She hated education.  He wasnt a real american hero.

To avoid this conflict you are probably right, lets sell our naming rights to the highest bidder.  "Microsoft Elementary" has a nice ring to it.  Really, would it be such a bad thing if this is what it took to get top notch education or the 'frills' we really want to see in our schools?

6) Advertising is ubiquitous in America. The notion that it can be avoided at school is a farce.  Strip off the Nike Swoosh, the Crayola labels, the Elmers cow, and the "insert mechanic shop here" pencils - not to mention banning sponsors of athletic events, extracurricular teams (cheer leading, band, whatever), ads from programs,  and and billboards within 1000 feet - then you might have a point.

Sorry, I'll take private money for public programs in exchange for a relatively small name plate any time I can get it.

They don't do this anymore, it seems. Now it's birds and creeks.
