(Sen.) Craig (R-Idaho) Arrested, Pleads Guilty Following Incident in Airport Restroom
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 09:14 PM by Newsjock
Source: Roll Call

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men's public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.

Craig's arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.

A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a "he said/he said misunderstanding," and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.

After he was arrested, Craig, who is married, was taken to the Airport Police Operations Center to be interviewed about the lewd conduct incident, according to the police report. At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, "What do you think about that?" the report states.

You failed to mention that he was arrested for foot tapping...
http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/related/198419.php

He was tapping his foot in the bathroom, the officer "knew this to be a sign" of signaling for gay sex and arrested him for disorderly conduct.    Some reports also indicate that the  Senator moved his foot under the divide and in some reports his hand could be seen under the stall divide. While certainly strange, it doesn't make complete sense to me on several levels and I don't think it would warrant an arrest.

First, why would someone who's livelihood depends on staying in the closet risk being exposed by coming on to strangers in a major airport?  Second, if foot tapping is an "everyone knows it" signal why would further clues be given?  And finally, why would any powerful and rich man pick up anyone of any sex in a public restroom when they could have whatever they wanted delivered in secret in DC?

I might be misconstruing this, but certainly this is no smoking gun.  and what does this have to do with his party affiliation?

I hope so....there needs to be a democrat congress to recalibrate the mistakes over the past 6.5 years and to keep in check the next rebublican president should Hill get the nomination.

Here is the police report:

If the officers statements are correct, it is pretty damning.  He was appeared nervous when confronted by the officer and hesitated to comply.  I have to glancing threw cracks to see if stalls are actually occupied, fidgeting when I have to go the bathroom, and tapping my foot.  I could see where foot contact could occur, but fail to adequately explain hand waiving under the stall.

Even so, I believe my reaction would have been very different.  I would have probably been more mad than nervous - as in pancakes do you mean I'm under arrest for tapping my foot while crapping?

Still not a smoking gun, but very strange indeed.

I would say pleading guilty is about as smokin' as you can get.

cannon_fodder

He plead guilty to disorderly conduct.  Not public indecency, soliciting sex, or any other sex crime.  Disorderly Conduct is pretty much a BS crime that the government says you were doing something they didnt like.

Guilty to that, is meaningless.  I might plead guilty in his situation too to avoid going to court on solicitation charges.  Even if I did nothing wrong. Guilty pleas when being blackmailed by the government are very frequent.

Not saying that's what happened here.  I'm still in the air.

Why in the world would someone plead guilty to tapping his foot in the bathroom and pay a $500 fine. How in the world is that disruptive? I would be up in arms if my toe tapping while taking a leak was cause for arrest. So would everyone.

There have been questions about his gayness since his involvement in a 1982 page scandal was looked into by the FBI - back then he released a preemptive statement saying he wasn't gay when no one asked him. He then got married to a girl in his office. Instant family instant hetero.

Damned right. I'd fight a charge like that to the death.

The excuse pleading guilty for the sake of expediency doesn't wash.

Craig also had been rumored to be gay-trolling for decades. He got caught.

I've done far more disruptive things in the bathroom than tapping my feet.

I will make sure I have no tunes stuck in my head before going into public restrooms from now on.

Disorderly conduct? About everyone on this board is guilty of that. As far as we know he was trying to get the guy in the next stall to pass him toilet paper or light a match. All that he got convicted of was being annoying, since he is a politician, that is no surprise. Anything else is speculative.

Lawmaker (Democrat) Arrested On Drunk Driving Complaint

Drunk driving a-hole democrat.

Man.  All Democrats are a bunch of lying, drinking, murderers.  Come on guys, you find a Republican now that did something wrong and complain about that.  Then someone else can find another story about a Democrat and we can round and round all day long.

Sounds like so much fun...

You need to do some smokin.....

For a conservative Senator to plead guilty to a lessor charge to avoid trial for soliciting gay sex is not at all surprising.  He is officially and legally guilty of disorderly conduct, nothing more.  He is widely suspected of "gay activities" and this certainly could implicate those suspicions further.

Then again, many people think Hil-dog is a man and have for over a decade now.  [;)]

Anyway, it certainly isnt a good thing.  But it is not enough to 100% convince me the guy was trying to [insert desired gay sexual reference here] in that bathroom.   I guess I inherently do not want to believe a US Senator, of any affiliation, could be that stupid.  Probably wishful thinking.

Hey Guido, how much you want to bet the Asian contributors were calling up to Barney Frank's condo looking for companionship.
