Lastly, I found it interesting that the mayor was quoted in the Tulsa World saying, "the increase is warranted, given Palmer's experience and what is offered to chiefs in comparable cities." Now, I am wondering if she feels the same way about the rank and file officers?  Will she now advocate pay raises to get the rest of the officers up to the same level as comparable cities? Further, does she feel that other city employees deserve to be paid a comparable wage to other cities our size?

That's a quote to put in the FOP's back pocket and save.

Even if the FOP wins, Palmer will stay over the PD.  It maybe even more likely now that she'll let the lawsuit go and hire within and leave Palmer above.

I'm sure Palmer needed steady income, but I think he was an upstanding chief and I am hopeful he will be such again.

I corrected that for you MH.

Considering the FOP recently got a raise that was more than double the rate of inflation, I don't know why they're still complaining.

Not to bring the wage battle up again, but . . . the contract isn't up until next July 1.  They didn't get any raise this year, the last raise was to cover two years.  I just seconded the comment that she herself stuck her foot in her mouth, if she raised Palmer's pay based on other cities. . . then its reasonable to expect her to consider that in the next contract as well.

Aw, what's wrong? Has Lorton been spending too much money on his sprawling estate, demolishing historic buildings downtown, buying influence, and contributing to political campaigns, to afford decent raises for his valued employees?

Did anyone see the channel 2 interview of Derrick Lewis, the president of the BOC?
They are so pissed.

I too am hoping the FOP will hold their breath for a while, I can assure you hundreds of officers are THRILLED with the choice and are ready to move forward.

I watched the press conference and am happy to see him back.

Palmer is a good choice, he wasn't her first choice or Bill Wells either, for that matter. I am sure the FOP will support Palmer, but if you think this will make the at-will issue will go away, you've got another thing coming. This issue will be Kathy Taylor's Bell's.

BTW, that does not mean I support or endorse this decision for Palmer as chief. I do not.

MH - I did see the BOS interview.  I found it interesting that he said they didn't understand when they had three qualified internal candidates why this is the best they could do.  I didn't realize the BOC was supporting the internal candidates?  Or they are now that they are really pissed with the choice?

I think all this is going to be very interesting.  In general, I think 99% of the officers will be happy with Palmer.  If crime goes down and there isn't shown any racial issues, people will ignore the NAACP and the BOC.  People care more about their safety than old grudges.  All the consent decree did is add a few more layers of fluff and cause the department to spend a TON more money to provide more data on themselves.  I don't know of any officers who changed the way they worked because of the decree.  You don't have to change your ways when what you do is enforce the laws fairly, regardless of race.

The BOC didn't throw their support either way until Palmer was hired. Now, they are saying anyone but Palmer.

The consent degree really didn't change how anyone I know worked.  It just added some extra paperwork and caused the city to spend a ton of money to get CALEA certified and to record/make available a bunch of data.

If anyone wants to see what informaion is collected as a result of the consent decree go to www.tpdd.org.  The website is not ran by the BOC, FOP, TPD or anyone affiliated with the consent degree.  It's ran by a independent person who has alot of time on their hands.  I find the information very interesting.

As heard over the weekend:

"Hell yes I'd be the Mayor's b$#%^ for $165K a year!"

Word around the campfire is that Palmer's security business had drained him financially.  He needed a job and didn't have a problem being an at will employee for a few years for $165K per year.

Dissenting officers can take heart in knowing that Ms. Taylor stands a good chance of being a one-term mayor.
