Local TV news going downhill?

I generally get too frustrated when I watch TV news but I found myself watching the channel 8 news tonight. The lead-off story about Fox Collision had to wait until they could work on the prompter because they couldn't even seem to remember what the story was about without it. They covered the standoff/shootout story by only doing an officer impression piece and not mentioning anything about the actual standoff. The "sidewalk to nowhere" story was all over the place and didn't explain the city's side at all. Even with the prompter working Coca-Cola opened a new center in the "Eastland Multiplex" instead of Eastgate Metroplex and their b-roll mainly showed toys-r-us.

I also thought it was a joke that the dentist talking about eating Halloween candy was named "Kaneta Lott."

There's an Austin Powers joke in there somewhere, I can just feel it...

Channel 2 is constantly pimping shopzilla.com, the website owned by their parent company.

The other day I watched something on I believe it was channel 8. The lead-in: Officer seriously injured. Then the actual story says they don't have any information on the severity of the officer's injuries.

The on screen graphics on all of the local tv stations are rife with errors. Big Al was spelling now Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie's name wrong on screen for weeks.

They can't report properly or even spell, but they sure are quick to promote themselves and their "breaking news."

I DVR the news. It doesn't take long to watch once I fast forward through all the stories that were in that day's paper and all the excess weather coverage to tell me it's gonna be 65 degrees and sunny tomorrow.

Found out the "Kaneta Lott" bit was canned, as were about half the stories. Kinda sad they can't make their own news.

I've abandon local news almost totally.  Half of the commercials durring the news are FOR the news.

"Now with Super Dopple Scanner Ultra Tracker Rad-Two Radar so strong it with cook pop-tarts!"

Turns me off.

All I want to know is, wet or no wet, cold or no cold.

Totally agree about the news. Would have to throw the weather in there as well. None of the guys can forecast themselves out of a paper bag.

Then, a few weeks ago during our last storm everyone one of the stations were going full tilt. One has to ask themselves if they are concerned about informing in a professional way or just worried about their market share. They will track a cloud completely across the state all the time completely captivated that the cloud is in our state. Way too much unnecessary coverage in my opinion.

Right on the money. ALL of the local stations are guilty of self promotion. "Anchors that cover the news, know the news". Really? would have never guessed that!

Lets be honest.  Should be "ANCHORS THAT READ THE NEWS, BUT DON'T NECESSARILY UNDERSTAND THE NEWS."

Nodding does not necessitate understanding.

Going downhill?  Hows about been down for a long time.

But check out OETA Nightly Oklahoma Report.  Really excellent, balanced and lots of information.  Puts the other local broadcasts to shame.  It comes on at 6:30 p.m. on Cox cable channel 11.

Now if only Oklahoma had a decent newspaper, or at least if the Dallas Morning News had a Tulsa Bureau with a Tulsa edition and delivered locally.

We are about to abandon the CBS Evening News after being loyal viewers for decades.  Katie is doing too many touchy feely stories.  Not enough hard news.  And the changes at CBS destroy any sense of loyalty.  They don't care about their past.  We don't care about their past.

Yes, we seriously need another newspaper alternative in Tulsa. I'm afraid the Tulsa World is a strong part of the "Good ole boy network" in Tulsa.

So lets start one.  We could call it um. . .TULSA NOW!

I swear that our local news is obsessed with lost puppies, sick kittens, and other crazy animal stories.  A dog that walked to Michigan in search of an owner.  An amazing cat that can tell time, etc.  OK, I am exaggerating.  I am allergic to fur, so it may be my own cold, stony heart, but enough with the animal tales.

Fox 23 is the worst of the lot.  During their 'breaking news' coverage of the stand off the other night, their reporter said, "Police are about to enter the apartment, but they're not certain if the man is completely dead."

Completely dead?  Could he have been partially dead?

It's like watching the news as reported by teenagers.
