Hey,

Can I get some suggestions for a regional two night getaway for the wife and I.  We are wanting to get away after the first of the year but don't want to get too far away from the kids.  We have been to Las Vegas a bunch and are looking for something else.  I thought about Branson but didn't see that many shows we liked.  Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I could get you arrested and tattoed in less than an hour in New Orleans. It is a great city with world class restaurants and the most unique shopping anywhere. You can buy really strong hurricane drinks from pushcarts on the street or voodoo dolls for a buck. Plus everything goes well with flashy Mardis Gras beads. The Harrahs casino is right downtown next to everything. Bourbon street is nasty (when it rains, it makes it's own gravy), but the blatant sex makes even the most liberal Oklahoman feel conservative.

I love the urban experience of downtown Denver. 16th street is a great mile of cool shops and the free train and shops stay running late and it feels incredibly safe. I love the walk-up Sonic and the unique music and bookstores. They also have the second largest amount of brew pubs in the world. Since you like to gamble, the small town of Central City/BlackHawk has a couple of dozen casinos, but a state law maximum bet of $5.

Alburquerque has an excellent Old Town. The downtown has many cool buildings and my favorite hotel is the original Hilton bought by Paris' grandfather Conrad. The air travels in a square (very rare) and that is why they have the big balloon festival there. There is the longest tramway in the world that comes down from the mountain Sunset from the car high in the mountains is a life-changing experience. The food is spectacular, Route 66 is very cool all through town and the tribal casinos are all directions including a beautiful large casino just north of town in the mountains heading to Santa Fe.

My favorite short getaway was to Eurkea springs. Rented a house with a private deck and hot tub for a couple hundred. There was also a breakfast buffet at a hotel on the way into town that was ridiculously large.

Hot Springs is nice, too.

Kansas City is always a winner.

Try this location...remember no TV, No phones and maybe you can use the cell phone from a hill.

I'll have to agree on Denver and the 16th Street Mall, plus their LoDo (Lower Downtown) area.  The 16th Street Mall area is a blast and easy to get around.  You can visit the Denver Mint (within walking distance of the Mall) plus visit lots of micro-breweries (if you like to try lots of different style beers).  And, depending on time of year you go, take in a football, baseball or hockey game (all in the downtown area).

I just got back from Branson yesterday. I saw Mannheim Steamroller and visited Silver Dollar City. Both was excellent. Also, if you have not seen Branson Landing, which could be coming to Tulsa, it too is excellent.

Silver Dollar City and Branson are nice this time of year.

Nice this time of year yes, but SDC it's still a hillbilly shopping mall with a ridiculously expensive cover charge.

SDC is expensive if you go just one day. I head down there about 12-14 days a year. It's just about the only theme park you can take your kids and not worry about the sort of jack donkey behavior from teens you see at Six Flags. Plus, the entire Branson area is very Christian and vet friendly...

Thought I'd plug a place I found awhile back, just this side of Eureka Springs:

Sunset Ridge Resort

Great log cabins. When alone in the woods is important, yet still less than 15 minutes from Eureka if the urge arises.

Eureka Springs would also be my suggestion.  Basin St. Hotel ( a little pricy), New Orleans Hotel, Palace Hotel. I'm not real big on B&B places.  There are LOTS of private cabins available for rent that are reasonably priced with a 5-10 minute drive to privacy.
Vote for the two party system!

Everyone has given some good examples.  The main thing the wife and I want to do is just get away and relax.  This will get me started thanks. If anyone thinks of others, just keep posting!

Eureka Springs is awfully girly and I know you are a manly man. The main industry seems to be weddings and day spas. If it makes the wife happy, I guess it is worth it.

They have decriminalized marijuana in Eureka Springs. I know you are a cop and wouldn't inhale, but you should be careful just the same.

Yeah, I don't think I would make it in Eureka Springs.

To be honest, I really just want a big place (condo or hotel suite) with a comfortable bed, a private hot tub and a great selection of beer.  The wife is the one that wants all the other perks.

I can assure you I would not worry about marijuana if I was off-duty and on vacation somewhere.
