I just heard this coach rag on TU's program, the fans (or lack thereof) and the choice of the Beach Boys as pregame music...

Sorry coach, but you get to recruit players to play at a modern, on-campus facility at the Reynolds Center... Bill Self, Tubby Smith, Nolan Richardson and Ken Hayes never had that priviledge... so if you don't like the pregame music, talk to somebody at your school, rather than pitch a hissy-fit at the media after the fact...

Sorry you weren't prepared for the season... sorry your kids got soundly beaten this year by ORU and downright wailed on by OU.

Don't let the door hit ya on the way out... hope you're as big a success after your TU days as football Coach Burns was...

Enjoy your big win over Mississippi Valley State...  [:D]     /sarcasm.

cannon_fodder

Wow, a little late on the bandwagon.

The team that lost to ORU has gone down the road.  Did you see the game against Charlotte (A 8-4 team)?  We CRUSHED them.  Likewise with the lesser competition.

If the team continues to shoot 50%+ and stays its course on defense, I now have some confidence in this young team.  Woj certainly managed to do SOMETHING with them after the OU disaster.

and I was one just about ready to call for heads.  STILL, no post season birth this year or next and I'm afraid that's it.  I think barring something obscene a coach gets 4 years.  That is solidly his system and his players, if he can not win then - he's not going to.

and for the rant - it was deserved.  The support TU basketball is getting is PATHETIC.  5000 season/corporate tickets and maybe 1500 butts in the seats.  Very bad support for the team.  In fact, I was getting upset that he was taking the entire thing in stride.

and yeah, Beachboys for warmup?  That's weak. There's something to be said about Xmas break and no pep band, but the Beach Boys?  Woj needs to take control of the program on all levels and make it happen (Graham has a que of what music is played when).  He has called it out, now it's up to him to change it.  I hope he does.

It'd be stupid to fire a coach so early in the season, especially when said team is showing signs of improvement.

He's only in his third season, and he's coming off a 20-win year.

I'd rather see a team start slowly and finish strong and not the reverse -- like OSU did last year.

I grew up with TU basketball...

Wojcik's tirade was truly classless.

Don't care how good the team does now... there are other coaches out there.  Coaches who don't blame the media and the fans and whoever was responsible for the piped in Beach Boys music when the TU students were on winter break...

Hey Wojcik... maybe you can get an assistant coach's job at that great program you cite... Wichita State...

Will try to find his little hissy-fit on video  and post it...

HazMatCFO

Wojcik, shut up and coach. The rest will take care of itself if you do your job.

I am a huge college basketball fan and I used to go to TU games on a semi-regular basis. It was a lot of fun when they were good but like most people in Tulsa I have no personal ties to TU other than both my of my parents going there. I went to Kansas so I know what good basketball looks like and I would go and watch a competitive TU team, but this team is not. A lot of other people in town with ties to other schools are just like me.

But it's very hard for me as a KU fan to get at all excited about TU when they get blown out by a mediocre OU team that's going to finish between 6th and 9th in the Big 12 and also owns losses to Hampton and Arkansas-Little Rock. TU's only decent win is against a Charlotte team that's having a very down year.

TU is not good, their out of conference schedule is very poor and they will get zero consideration for an at large bid to the tournament. The coach wants people to care? He's in his 3rd year and is not fielding a competitive team, even for Conference USA. TU used to be assured an at large bid and regularly won games in the tournament, used to have pro prospects on the roster, used to beat OU, Arkansas and OSU, when they were good. The other area Division 1 teams are all way down and they are blowing TU out, what does that tell you?

This year TU has zero shot at the tournament and Wojick wants to claim he's having a great year? That's crap, what he has is a very weak schedule that's he using to pad his record and protect his job.

Wojcik has outstanding facilities and a good region to recruit in where the area big schools are not doing well at all right now. These should be good days for TU basketball and frankly in his third year he should be further along than he is.

FOTD

Someone needs to go to the tape vault and show this coach the tapes from the Joe Swank, Jim King, and Ken Hayes periods....get a grip coach. These previous coaches had a lot of class compared to your whinning (spelled with an h).

I'm watching halftime at the Sugar Bowl...

Hawaii's band just played Over the Rainbow.... Georgia's band just played Journey's Don't Stop Believin'...

and Coach Wojcik can't deal with the Beach Boys... geez.  [}:)]

Wojcik infuriated at apathy

TU coach criticizes spirit after fifth straight win.

Doug Wojcik challenged the Tulsa athletic administration, fans and even the student band following the Golden Hurricane's 71-46 win over Mississippi Valley State on Sunday afternoon.

What was the reason for his press conference rant? The third-year TU basketball coach was fed up with a ho-hum atmosphere at the Reynolds Center.

"I may end up having a lot of people not like me in Tulsa, but that's too bad," an emotional Wojcik said after his team captured its fifth straight victory. "It isn't changing unless I start to do something about it.

"I'm not happy about this environment at all."

While Sunday's paid attendance was 5,175 (the largest this season), there were at least 1,500 less in the seats.

The coach said he's always been thankful for the faithful Hurricane fans, but said things need to change.

"Everyone here -- the fans, the players, the coaches, the administration -- we all want the same thing here," he said. "But we all have to work together to get that accomplished."

Tulsa, he said, isn't in the same category of a Xavier, Wichita State, Creighton or Dayton, "because of all the things that go into being a big mid-major program."

During the press conference, Wojcik pointed at a school like Dayton, which maintained season-ticket sales during lean years in the 1990s. He fingered TU marketing meetings, which need to help drive attendance. He blasted Beach Boys music played during pregame warmups.

Wojcik said he thinks he's done his job as coach, which includes a 21-3 record in home games over the past two seasons.

"I'm doing my part now," he said. "If I didn't care, if I wanted this to be a retirement job, I wouldn't give a dang. But I do care. I care for my kids, who work their butts off."

Wojcik said he even thanked his team before Sunday's game.

"I told them, 'Guys, you never complained to me once. Guess what? I really appreciate that.' Let me be mad about that," Wojcik said.

Does Wojcik worry about negative backlash?

"Of course," he said. "But what are we going to do? Run around and not address the issue?"

TU athletic director Bubba Cunningham, who didn't attend the postgame press conference, didn't hear Wojcik's statements and declined comment.

Wojcik said he's heard grumblings about this year's home schedule, which included games like Central Arkansas, Texas-Pan American and, Sunday's opponent, Mississippi Valley State.

"(TU) played Grambling in (2001) . . . UCLA played UC-Davis yesterday. Dayton, before they played Pitt, played Loyola-Baltimore," Wojcik said. "It goes on. It's an excuse."

Next year's schedule includes home games against BYU, Missouri State and Oklahoma.

"Just so everyone knows, they have a year from today, we have a year to get a pep band, we have a year to get a crowd here for BYU for Dec. 30, 2008," Wojcik said.

During Tulsa's past two home games, during the Christmas break, there hasn't been a TU pep band. That hasn't gone unnoticed by Wojcik.

"My guys are warming up to the Beach Boys and they don't know who the Beach Boys are," he said.

Okay USR.  Let me get this straight, you are ranting because Wojcik is ranting.  How about I rant about that?  Long winter w/o soccer, eh? [;)]

Blase home schedule, holidays, crappy weather, what's he expect?  If they keep winning, they will get more asses in the seats in the next couple of months.

Swake, you should like TU basketball, it's a great feeder program for future KU coaches. [:D]

Is Danny Manning going to be TU's next head coach?

Long winter without soccer?  Nope.  Some 24-year old Tulsan has put his money where his mouth is...

(makes me feel like buying a bottle of XanGo... filled with anti-oxidants having powerful anti-inflammatory properties).  [:P]

Besides, some of us haven't been saving up TulsaNow forum "frequent poster miles" to go on a winter cruise... just sayin'... [;)]

Believe it or not, I've been a fan of TU basketball almost as long as I've been a fan of soccer... I had an aunt who went to TU but none of the rest of the family went there... "Ain't no stoppin' us now..."

Tulsa Rufnex = 1978-1985, 1983 Soccer Bowl Champions
TU basketball, Rollin' with Nolan = 1981-1985, 1981 NIT Champions

***and after my last Tulsa Roughnecks game the summer of '84, there was a postgame concert at Skelly....... by the Beach Boys (yep, they were friggin' old, even back then...)  [}:)]

Kelvin Sampson is available...

Just make sure to keep the telephone out of his hands.

Argh.  I'd rather lose with Woj than get slapped by the NCAA. I'd have to imagine it's death for the next program dumb enough to hire him and get caught again.

Still do or die next year for Woj in my book.  Some post season play or I'll be an unhappy ticket holder officially.
