Robbery suspect dies in crash in high-speed pursuit

by: RHETT MORGAN World Staff Writer
1/2/2008  12:00 AM

CLAREMORE -- A robbery suspect who shot at Sand Springs and Tulsa police officers during a high-speed chase through three counties died Wednesday morning after crashing his vehicle on the Will Rogers Turnpike, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. just past mile marker 266, roughly 11 miles east of Claremore on the turnpike, OHP Trooper Betsy Randolph said. No police officers were injured during the chase, which began in Sand Springs, though Sand Springs and Tulsa police cruisers were struck by gunfire, Randolph said.

The decedent apparently was involved in a gasoline driveoff at a convenience store on Wednesday morning in a vehicle reported stolen, Assistant Sand Springs Police Chief Mike Carter said.

The man crashed after the OHP and a Rogers County deputy set up stop sticks at mile marker 255, she said.

At 10:38 a.m., Sand Springs police notified OHP Troop B that it was in an eastbound pursuit at U.S. 64 and 39th West Ave. The pursuit continued through Tulsa, then onto I-44 and eventually the Will Rogers Turnpike, Randolph said.

Several times during the chase, the man fired shots at Sand Springs police cruisers, Randolph said. No OHP units sustained damage, she said.

Assuming no mental illness or anything of the like - good riddance.  Shooting at cops over a tank of gas?  Surely this person had little to offer society.

Sorry for his family, it might not have been their fault it was a moron.  But otherwise I'm glad the heard is down one.

Shame that he was killed.....I'd rather see him in a body cast for a few years.....just for being an idiot.
He was just another P.O.S. common criminal.

He's led "such a productive life".....

The News On 6's Ashli Sims reports Adam Shotwell was just released from prison about 18 months ago. He was to appear in court next week on a charge of lewd molestation.

quote:
This wasn't Shotwell's first brush with the law. In Creek County, he pled guilty to second degree burglary in 2002. He served two years in prison for that crime.

In Tulsa County, he was convicted of forgery in 2003. And most recently, he was charged in Osage County. A spokesperson with the district attorney's office says Shotwell is accused of picking up two 13-year-old girls, taking them to his home and giving them alcohol and marijuana. He's accused of molesting one of those teens.

I am glad he was the only one injured in this.  Did anyone see the pics of one fo the patrol cars he hit with a bullet?  Front windshield, could have easily hit the officer.

You know, it's cases like this when I wish PD had a pair of Stinger missiles mounted to the front of their vehicles.

But, all's well that ends well.

As they used to say on a radio station in Columbus, OH... It's too bad you can't recycle white trash...

The question remains: Why was this dumbass ever released from custody?

Chase Suspect Killed Himself
KOTV - 1/4/2008 6:18 AM - Updated 1/4/2008 7:29 AM
The state Medical Examiner's office says a Sand Springs man believed to have run from authorities after committing a crime died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities say 26-year-old Adam Shotwell shot at police officers during the chase Wednesday morning and hit three police cars.

Shotwell crashed his car on the Will Rogers Turnpike east of Claremore. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Sand Springs Police say the chase began after Shotwell allegedly drove off without paying for gasoline at a Sand Springs convenience store.

I know this makes me a horrible person, but I wish we could find ways to encourage more perennial low-lifes to exit the world.

We need another Vietnam.  We just do good a job of keeping the slackers alive in Iraq.
