SO WHY IS CONGRESS MEETING TO DISCUSS STERIODS IN BASEBALL!!! WFT CARES! WILL ANYONE CARE WHEN THEIR SSI CHECK DOES NOT KEEP UP WITH INFLATION? WHEN THEIR HOME IS WORTH 50% OF WHAT THEY PAID FOR IT?

Wait a minute... I figure if Congress was looking into the finer points of drugged up baseball players that it must mean those other seemingly important issues of state business were solved.

Unlike the days of Rome’s republic, by our invention of the automated printing press we have surpassed their attempt of a republic form of government of the people.   They used medal as a barter of exchanged while we use the cheaper paper.
 
There are no records of any nation changing their form of government at the voting polls; the segregation line grows wider between the rich and working poor each day.  Changes in policies of political bodies are self-evident showing the changes come only like the war of 1860 brought about.

In the local environment of elected officials they are moving ahead in converting the donated “Gilcrease Native American Collection of Tulsa” to the “Gilcrease Collection of TU” allowing a private university to have control over the working poor’s gift.

IT easy to suggest voting the incumbents out but by now the ballot will need to be attached to the end of a gun barrel.

1) Rome did not use "medal", they used precious meTal coins.  You can do the same today if you really want to, just go get a horde of silver dollars or barter with scrap copper pipe.  It's the same as olden Rome - just as cumbersome and impractical. Or you can always buy gold bullion.  No one is stopping you.

Also, each average American would earn 21 grams of Gold per week, or 40 T.Oz per year.  The annual production of gold is about 300,000 OZ.  Or about 4,000,000,000 OZ short of what just the United States would demand to sustain its Gold based economy annually. A meager 13 fold shy.

Given that demand, the price of gold would rocket over night from 900 an ounce to > $11,997 an ounce  to meet the new demand.  Thus rendering it impractical for use in satellites, fillings, electronics, or wedding rings.  The working poor could no longer get married, talk on their cell phones, or listen to their new iPods.  I think the working poor would agree that the gold is more useful as a commodity than a currency.

Think of the working poor, or listen to reason.    The metal economy died hundreds of years ago for a reason.  Though I really don't imagine you've ever thought it through.

2) How many soviet block countries are democracies now sans violent revolution?  When did the English have their civil war to revoke the monarchy's power in earnest?  How many colonies broke away from Europe without a war after WWII (Australia, Canada...)?

3) Awesome.  What, in the hell, does the Gilcrease Museum have to do with the steroid scandal hearings for baseball?  The Shadow knows!

a) "the working poor’s gift." - Thomas Gilcrease  was among the richest men of his day.  He founded and chaired a multi-national corporation that he eventually sold.  If he is an example of the "working poot" I sure as hell hope I get there someday.

b) The collection is not transferring ownership in any way, shape, or form.  TU has no ownership interest in the collection.  The collection remains the property of the City of Tulsa via the Gilcrease Trust.  Clear?

c) The University of Tulsa is being given management control over the museum due to the ineptness and disfunctionality of the current management regime that has seen a continuation of the status quo for over a decade.  

I know you fear progress, hate the University of Tulsa, and generally avoid bothering to read any facts - so I'm sorry if I have informed you.

Major announcement this morning!

In her first major accomplishment as speaker of the house, Nancy Pelosi has completed the first phase in the "Greening of the Capital" program.

The capital commissary will no longer serve unhealthy food like meat-loaf, hamburgers or hot dogs.  Replacing these menu items is a healthy menu of Mahi-Mahi, green salads with low-fat dressings and several vegetarian items.

“Today we say that the Capitol will be not just a shining symbol of our democracy, but a symbol of our commitment to the future.  Not only by the power of our ideas on energy independence, but by the power of our example, we hope to send
a message to the world and to the country.”


Napkin dispensers have been replaced with electronic dispensers that only allow one napkin per visit, and an intricate recycling program has been instituted for reusable and bio-waste products.

The "Greening of the Capital" program, which was started in June of 2007, also includes the conversion of capital light bulbs from incandescent to low-voltage fluorescent and LED, and the replacement of nearly 300 cars and trucks with hybrid and natural-gas vehicles.

"We are purchasing wind power, using natural gas at the Capitol Power Plant, and as we phase in more carbon efficiencies, purchasing carbon offsets. "

The cost of the program along with the purchase of carbon offsets from Generation Investment Management, a London-based company with offices in Washington, D.C., is estimated to cost nearly $100 million a year.

See they are doing something.  Looks like they are working very hard!  Former Vice President Al Gore is Chairman of Generation Investment Management.  He must be helping!

 Seems the first meetings to draw up a new charter was conducted by employees of TU; at a public meeting, almost 50 years ago.

Next we will sell naming rights to the collection.

Gilcrease made his money from oil.  Thanks to the Dawes Acts he was entitled to 160 Acres by virtue of his Creek heritage.  It so happened his 160 Acres sat on top of the Glennpool.  From there he made astute decisions and grew his oil wealth within the industry.

With this wealth he started purchasing large amounts of art.  He opened a museum in Texas for a while but it failed.  Undeterred his collection grew and grew as he bought out other collectors.

An oil bust in the 1950's sapped much of his income.  Though he still made enough money to be rich, his lifestyle and "art habit" continued to sap his wealth.   He had a choice of either selling his oil company or his art - he decided to put his art for sale.

The citizens of Tulsa had a stroke of genius and agreed to pay off Gilcrease' debt to the tune of  $2.25 million in 1955 (gold price 1955:  $35 an OZ.  So in today's money we paid him $58,000,000 for his collection).  To his credit he continued to grow his collection and fund research and upon his death in 1962 - bequeathed that portion of his collection to the city.

Most construction on the site was done in 1949.  So when you worked for him 58 years ago, he was an extremely wealthy man (he owned $58 million in art!).  He remained very wealthy when he died in 1962 as oil had largely recovered and Tulsa had paid of all his debts.  

In short - the guy was not the fabled "working poor" and you have again illustrated your lack of a basis in fact.

HUH?  I hope you know that since 1977 (or 71' I'm not sure) all pennies have been made out of mostly Zink with copper electroplate.  I hope you haven't been saving them, cuz you got a pile of nuthin!

Go ahead, take a pair of pliers or metal snips and cut one in half.  It's easy because Zink is really soft.

Nickels however are made of an alloy containing 75% copper and 25% nickel.  The estimated metal value of a nickel is around 5.8 cents at todays prices.  But it's a federal offense to melt them down.

It is illegal to "deface" US Currency as an act of maliciousness against the government or for profit.  You are free to write phone numbers, place stickers, or cut pennies in half for your own amusement.  In fact, copper pennies are commonly used in high school science acquirements (real copper pennies which are pre 1968 I though... whatever).

I believe its all pennies made before 1982 that are mostly copper, and worth twice their face value at the current copper price.

I thought the original post had some good points, I'm kinda surprised you guys are picking on him. Oh, and no one said that the collection was donated by a 'working class poor' individual, they said it was donated to the working class poor, which, we all know, TU doesn't exactly represent.

I'm a TU graduate myself, but only because my parents had the money to send me there.
