Wow.  I hate to say it -- and apologies to RM -- but he was never really in a position to go the distance.  Not that his message wasn't worthwhile, or his campaign run well, but Hillary and Obama sucked all the air out of the race.  I think in a different year, he might've faired much better.

Question:  what happens to the delegates that he's won to date?  Where do they go?

sgrizzle

Why do the mediocre candidates back out before the completely worthless ones?

Giuliani?
Ron Paul?
Gravel?

I am saddened today that Edwards drops out. I just really liked his message of two Americas. We do have a problem with the haves and the have nots and need to do something.  His delegates are not bound. They can go anywhere.

He was probably going to get three hundred of the 1,700 delegates on Super Tuesday. Hillary was going to get 900 and Obama the rest. Why would he drop out now?

My theory...he knew it was going to be almost impossible to beat Hillary after next Tuesday. What gives you a bigger bargaining chip...going to the convention with 500 of the 4,000 delegates to play king-maker or working to unify the party and taking an active role in a new administration?

His endorsement of either Obama or Hillary will be big if he does it this week.

The Herald Tribune reported yesterday: "Edwards said he was in the race for the long haul and expected to do well Tuesday in Oklahoma's presidential primary."

Is that Edwards' two Americas: Those who tell the truth and those who do not.

President Bush lies and people die...do you really want to talk about lies?

I was surprised by Edwards dropping out as well.  I really am curious what prompted it.  I like Edward's message, too, but he didn't seem to move beyond it.  It was the same message from 2004, and at some point it does start to sound like a broken record.  I am not trying to demean the significance of it--I believe it is critical--but people grow bored quickly.

So you at least concede that Edwards lied to Tulsans YESTERDAY. Oh, and what does President Bush have to do with this thread? I mean, other than being a red herring and all...

I'm not sure Edwards lied. After the meeting in OK, his advisers probably did a serious sit-down session and pinned him down on whether it was truly worth it to keep finishing a distant third in primaries.

These withdrawal decisions tend to happen really fast.

You may be right. But will you agree with me that this particular decision was REALLY, REALLY fast. Come on, we are talking about hours? Edwards rolls into Tulsa, cranks up the decibel and excitement level with a large union, then dumps on them. That's what I am angry about.

If you're that mad, don't vote for him.

Not that you would have anyway.

Forgive me if I think your anger is rather shallow. Based on your output in this forum, you're angry at a lot of things.

Just one of a long, long list ...

Hmm. CNN reports that on Tuesday, he told Obama and Clinton he was "considering" dropping out.

So I guess the decision indeed was made "REALLY, REALLY" fast.

So much for the lying theory.

It's not about who I would vote for. It's about Edwards misleading people in this town. Can't you see that? Early Tuesday he is telling Tulsans to be there for him on Super Tuesday, then later on the same day he is apparently telling Clinton and Obama he is considering abandoning his campaign. "Shallow" anger or not, Edwards should be called on this.

I'll digress here. We can disagree on how one interprets this.
