Vista runs horribly? Thanks Microsoft and Intel

Apparently, under pressure from Intel and other vendors, Microsoft lowered the "offical" requirements for Vista. They did this to help companies like Intel to move the product they had on hand.

Translation: THOUSANDS of people bought computer that said they should run Vista, but in actuality, they are woefully underpowered. Maybe that is why something like 1/3 vista PC buyers downgraded to XP.

Intel + Microsoft gouging the consumer since 1985.

I always thought it was kind of the reverse.  The operating system eating up more resources and demanding more power, so people feel the need to buy newer and faster hardware.

Thats a weird combo there.  What you suggest is that Intel & company needed to get slower hardware off the shelf, and that it wouldn't sell as much if it wasn't capable of running the latest OS?

I've ignored computer hardware for a good 5+ years now - What are we talking about to run Vista acceptably fast (not MS's requirements) ?

Microsoft always listed "minimum" and "recommended" that they have done now is released "capable" which really just means it will install and run if you disable most of the vista-specific features.

The list under "premium ready" is what would normally be considred the minimum to run Vista (although not exceptionally well.) You need to double the processor speed, memory, and video card for decent performance.


Vista sold very poorly off the shelves, a high percentage of their sales numbers were from OEM's so catering to them was in their best interest.

Is there any particular reason to upgrade to Vista anyway?  XP gets the job done.

If you want flashy graphics to use up most of your  computer's power, then yeah.

My daughter got a Mac Book Pro for her birthday earlier this month.  She's about got me convinced to go Mac myself.  I'm starting to feel like a typing anachronism using a PC-based computer anymore.

She claims that a Mac runs Windows applications better than a PC.

Is there any reason to run Vista other than wanting 64bit compatibility?  I've heard nothing good about it and haven't even been tempted to switch.

Yes.  My mac runs Vista far better than any of our PCs.  But I find Vista clunky and disorganized.  Apple is the way to go.  

Go to the Apple store at Woodland Hills and just play with one for a bit.  You will agree.

My phone is a mac and my next PC purchase will be MAC. The current MacOS is everything Vista isn't. Reliable, smooth running, and good.

Aside from voice recognition (which is a cool toy) Vista does one thing well:
It lets you shrink it's own partition down to par minimum, allowing you to create a new partition in which to install XP.

You can then use something like VistaBootPro to boot from the XP partition, and switch back to Vista at will (to download fixes, I would bet).

listen, if you were stupid enough to buy a 915 chipset in 2006, you deserve to get what was coming to you.

The BARE minimum to run aero well was the nVidia 6150 and even it sucks.  What you end up with is an experience index of about 2.1 or so, or in otherwords, horrible.  Plop in a 8600GT or better and your fortune changes for the better.

I think you can't be too smart if you bought anything in 2006 labeled Intel. Intel people told me first hand they had nothing worth buying in 2006, 2007 was only half crap.
