Just wanted to brag to someone else...anybody else...everybody else.

He is the Tulsa Public Schools Elementary Chess Champion for 2008. He had to beat the best players from all over the city today. The tournament was almost all fifth graders and he is only a third-grader.

He gets his good looks from me and his brains from his mama.

Wow.  Tell the kid the Internet said nice job.  That's quite a feat.

When're you gonna buy him his first D&D rulebook?

That's awesome!  I never had the discipline nor patience for chess.

I loved chess and the tourneys!  Makes me want to dust off my old board and play a couple rounds.

Congrats!  You must be very proud.

Congratulations!  I don't remember how to play chess or the third grade.

Kudos! You must be so proud - and rightfully so. Good job and congrats to him for winning, and you for producing intelligent offspring.

Thanks for everybody's comments...

He is a pretty well-rounded kid. He is a great soccer goalie and is going to two different soccer camps over spring break. He is also in the city-wide school finals in speech competition in a couple of weeks. Most of the other kids he will face in the big chess tournaments (there is another this Saturday at TCC SE campus) don't do anything but chess. They play in tournaments all the time and study the great chess openings, carry a board around everywhere, etc.

He doesn't. He plays football and video games, helps me pick up illegal signs and his mother by planting trees. He probably wouldn't even list chess as one of his ten favorite things to do. That why it was so surprising that he has picked it up so quickly. He didn't even start playing until Thanksgiving less than three months ago.

I will report back after Saturday's tournament. Maybe his early success is just a fluke and he will get beat in four moves. I hope not, but can't expect him to win all the time, especially against the kind of competition that they have in the big rated tournaments.

I can state for a fact that no, no they don't.

That is terrific. Not many kids learn this art with all the other "baby sitting" software games out there.

Lost my chest partner last year when she moved back to her homeland on the left coast. Miss that 2 a.m. head banging. Trying to think 3 moves ahead in chess is difficult with a dame across the table at midnight.

I bet your 3rd grader could beat this devil....

Bridge is my next obstacle.

Please quit torturing the little guy by making him pick up signs.....but best of luck guiding him towards an ivy leauge scholarship....
